Nicholas Allen
born in Leeds, UK, grew up bilingual as a small child in Cologne (D). After ten years at private boarding schools in Britain he came for six months to Vienna to study opera singing aged 17 and is still here! In 1967 he joined Vienna’s English Theatre and is also still there. He devoted 40 years to helping build up the theatre’s educational work, both schools touring and, later, initiating theatre-pedagogical workshops in English during the 1990s. He is also active as classical singer, performing occasionally in public. In 2002, together with Rudolph Wojta, he founded the summer festival, „Shakespeare in Styria“ in Murau which, for 15 years, mounted English and later German Shakespeare productions with young professional actors from all over Central Europe. For this work and his life-work at Vienna’s English Theatre, he was awarded the Berufstitel Professor by the Austrian Bundespräsident in 2013. He now holds formal debating workshops at schools, also in Upper Austria, for the general public. He has his own course, „The Art of Debate and the European Mind“, at the FH University in Steyr. Having contributed in a modest way to Vienna’s English Theatre Academy he is delighted to be joining BSA to help provide students with a solid grounding and foundation for discovering and performing the thrilling world of William Shakespeare, as well as the craft of speaking, so as successfully to communicate.
